Optical measurements

In 2014 we put into trial operation the system for pre-processing and transfering the data from "ISTOK" remote point. Created and updated the archive of experimental optical observations.

In 2014, regular optical observations (night-time) were conducted at auroral and mid-latitudes (remote point "Istok" (Norilsk city) and the Geophysical Observatory (GPO) ISTP). At remote point "Istok" from January 2014 to the present time are continued the optical observations using a wide-angle camera to record night sky radiation in the near infrared range. In November 2014, as a part of measuring and computing system, installed on the remote point "Istok", were put into trial operation the patrol spectrograph (PS-1) for the registration of the spectral distribution of the night sky radiation and overview color CCD camera for recording spatial intensity distribution of the radiation.

  • Spectrograph PS-1 is based on UM-2 prism monochromator and a CCD camera SDU-R259. The device points to the zenith. Its field of view ~ 12 degrees along the entrance slit (north-south) and ~5 degrees across the slit.
  • The color CCD camera SDU-R415C (field of view of about 35degrees) uses the matrix SONY CCD ICX415AQ.
  • At point "Istok" also mounted the photocamera for studies of the luminescence emission of the sky (Filin-1ch) on the basis of the CCD (CCD charge-coupled device, or CCD sensor - short from the English CCD, "Charge-Coupled Device") is intended for the registration and investigation of own radiation (luminescence) of the atmosphere of the night sky, its spatial and temporal variations, the natural and artificial space objects (meteors, satellites), for monitoring of the atmospheric transparency and for solving some other problems.

Modernization of optical complex at control and measurement site.
2015

The optical domes that are the part of the control and measurement site, because of its geometric dimensions does not allow to change the direction-of-sight of big optical equipment with a small field of view. It was decided to install a single optical dome with a diameter of 1 m instead of 4 optical domes with a diameters of 30 cm. In the spring of 2015 two optical domes with a diameter of 1 m from plexiglas were acquired. In the summer of 2015 the replacement of the optical domes we done. The mount for the domes were made in the experimental department of ISTP SB RAS.

The following equipment was installed in October and November 2015:

  1. Spectrograph Shamrock

  2. Camera CSDU-285c   with CCD SONY CCD ICX285AQ intended for registration of the spatial emission structure of variations of the night atmosphere in the spectral RGB range. The field of view of the camera ~ 100 º. Exposure 15sec.

  3. Camera CSDU-423-1. is designed for the study of spatial distributions of variations in the intensity of emission of atomic oxygen in the line of 630 nm. The field of view of the camera ~ 70 º. Exposure 30 sec.

  4. Camera CSDU-423-2 is designed for the study of the spatial distribution of atmospheric emission variations in the spectral range 420-530 nm. The field of view of the camera ~ 70 º. Exposure 30 sec.

To test different methods of installation of optical equipment in the Far North (low temperatures, snow storm, the electricity deficit) it was produced the thermally insulated housing with optical dome, designed for installation in any location with suitable conditions of visibility. The module requires only a power connection ~ 220V. Control and data transmission is performed via a wireless communication channel (WiFi). Dome space is hermetically separated from the equipment compartment. Currently, the SDU-415 camera is located in this housing.

Pre-processing and data transmission is performed using a computer running the Linux operating system. The raw data are delivered to the ISTP with hard disks.
